Perceptions of self and expectations of retirement 2017

Thank you very much for agreeing to take part in our survey.

The purpose of this study is to examine people’s feelings and expectations about retirement. Retirement may or may not be something you have actively thought about before. That’s ok - we are just interested in your thoughts and feelings at this point, regardless of how much consideration you have given this issue.

Through exploring the different ways in which people think and feel about retirement, we hope to get a better sense of what might influence how people approach this life transition. So, as you complete the survey, remember there are no right or wrong answers – we are genuinely interested in what you think, whatever that might be.

The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. We ask you to complete the survey from beginning to end, answering each question as you go, in one sitting. If there are some questions that you do not feel comfortable answering, you are under no obligation to do so. However, if you are comfortable answering our questions, we would appreciate it if you could provide a response to each one – having full answers to our questions will help us greatly.

All of your answers are anonymous, and all the data collected will be treated confidentially and will only be used for research purposes. If, after you start, you change your mind about participating, you may simply discard the questionnaire.

If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the researcher who gave you this survey, or our supervisor: Professor Manuela Barreto (
